HEADACHE BEHIND EYES – CAUSES AND TREATMENTS

HEADACHE BEHIND EYES – CAUSES AND TREATMENTS. A headache is a common symptom that is shared by numerous diseases. The diseases that share this symptom range from the common migraine to headaches that occur behind the eye. While the former already has an extensive database about its causes and treatment, the latter only has a limited number of works that deal with the disease. This article will serve as an addition to these works and will hopefully give an insight into the headache behind eyes including its causes and treatments.

Causes

There are many causes of a headache behind eyes and these are usually accompanied by eye pain, eye dryness, and vision loss.

The most common cause of this disease is the drying of the eyes. Dry eyes are the result of excessive use of the eyes for prolonged periods of time. This results in excessive tearing which causes the headache.

Another common cause is vision problems. Vision problem takes effect when people forget to wear their prescribed glasses. This leads to the eyestrain and discomfort especially when the person has nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

The third cause of this disease is known as orbital inflammatory syndrome. This syndrome takes place in the orbit or the “house” of the eye. When this part gets inflamed, it pushes against the other parts of the eye, leading to pain and discomfort. To diagnose this disease, it is best to have a CT scan to isolate the area of the orbit where the inflammation occurred.

Treatments

Since there are many causes of a headache behind the eyes, there are also several treatments that can be used to relieve them.

For causes that are accompanied by pain, it is advised that patients engage in exercise. Exercise releases the body’s endorphins which functions as a pain reliever.

For causes that are accompanied by severe headaches or migraines, it is advised that patients stay in bed and sleep. Other options that can be done include ice packs and intake of medication.

For causes that come with sinusitis, patients are advised to use steam to remove the congestion behind the eyes. This will alleviate the pressure behind the eyes and will lead to relief. A nose spray would also be useful for this cause. Lastly, patients are advised to take over the counter medication if the pain becomes too unbearable. In circumstances such as this, it is advised to seek medical help immediately.
